TBL 2014. A YEAR OF MANY FIRST'S
Back in March of last year, You knew it was going to be an exciting campaign. However no one could have predicted the countless inaugural events that would unfold and make a mark on TBL history. Here now is a list of groundbreaking memories from the past year.
MOST TEAMS EVER
A total of 16 teams were assembled and broke a participating record. New teams included the Van Horne Vipers, Agincourt Hitmen, Cliffside Heights and a second Leaside Aeros squad. All 4 teams made an impact and represented their respective hoods well.
BURBY MOBILITY
A revolutionary invention was used by 2 teams this year. The mobile box was introduced by Riverdale and Leslieville. This also made it possible to play at The Hood which is a fun park that would otherwise be unplayable. In 2015 Look for improvements to the box and more locations to be added as a result.
BURBY DAY IN T.O
On a sunny June day we had a record number of teams playing.
An attempt was made to travel to as many games on the same day as possible. This was a daunting challenge due to locations and start times but the video made will attest that it was a great day for the sport. This summer expect a similar day with multiple teams playing at the same park.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
It's always nice to get media coverage on our beloved game. CITY TV decided to do a profile on the amazing Joe Callahan. CITY viewers were introduced to Burby and it's dominant pitcher. This was Very Cool and I think all the TBL members were proud of this exposure.
WORLD CUP FEVER
It may have been spawned by this summers World Cup of Soccer. It's developed into something special. World Cup of Burby is an on going tourney that brings all players and the many cultures together to compete for national pride. 6 teams are still trying to form an identity but we will get there. The early powerhouses look to be the Eastern Block and Can Am crews with The UK, Mediteranians, and Carribean right behind and The Far East not that far off.
WEEKEND ALL STARS
For the first time ever the league had it's annual All Star game on a Saturday and it resulted in a full day of festivities. Both conferences came together to perform 2 all star games, 2 Home Run Derby's and a league BBQ to celebrate. Throw in a loud speaker with tunes and you have an event that will surely stay on the weekend.
There were many other firsts for the TBL this year including 2 successful end of year banquets. 10 different players received hardware and Leslieville finally won it's first championship.
Finally let's not forget the first ever TBL poker classic series and a Fantasy Football League! A shining example of how this league has grown on and off the Feild.
So as we embark on another great season, the league will once again try and add to all the amazing things that were accomplished in 2014.
