CANADA'S ONLY BURBY/WALLBALL LEAGUE
Robert Irvine is a financial advisor who knows just how you should invest your money. He's also a solid Burby player. Despite playing on a team with no wins in 2 years, He says that investing in the Warriors is a safe bet. His rookie hitting could be better (.258) his pitching needs some fine tuning(17.64 era) but his mind set is where it needs to be. He's determined to get him and his team into a better place. Let's sit down and invest some time with Robert Irvine.
TBL - This is your first year in the league, and you were basically a walk on hoping to get picked up by any team. What were your expectations about The Warriors and the TBL and what are your thoughts at this point of the season?
RI - My expectations were low but I felt I had a lot to bring to the table pitching wise until an early season injury derailed those hopes but I have been able to adapt with off speed pitches and a quick bat. I believe this team is now moving in the right direction with the addition of Gary Massey and teams are going to have a tough go at it at Oakridge going forward. Every team that is a sub par one has to start somewhere and I am thinking the team can be a team that will surprise some teams if they have an off day...........this team will be able to join the upper echelons of this league in 2 years in my mind.
TBL - What are some things that you didn't expect and thus you need to work on?
RI - Getting back to playing outfield with a tennis ball........forgot how light a tennis ball can be and how it can bounce out of my glove on pop ups
TBL - You are the only knuckleballer in the TBL. Is that something you'd like to perfect and make it a standard Irvine pitch? How hard is it to make a tennis ball knuckle?
RI - I am always watching videos on how to perfect the knuckleball so it is not going anywhere anytime soon.........it is a hard pitch to throw and for that reason I have add an eephus pitch to the arsenal so I can mix between the two
TBL - what the hell is an eephus pitch?
RI - It's a very high curveball that get s10-12 feet in the air and drops down into the box.
TBL - It's a pitch that drops even more at Oakridge Hill. What do you like about playing there?
RI - The slope of the mound allows me to throw insanely high pitches which in turn results in a lot of pop ups. It seems to be a long way to the fence and when the winds get going there it is a really hard park to hit out of.
TBL - Rumor has it that you may not be playing with Warden next year. Care to comment? If not Warden, then where would you play?
RI - I am currently under contract with the Warriors and that is my focus........I can't speculate the future as I really don't know at this point what the future holds as there are rumors that Warden may change its name for next year
TBL - Sounds like your all business. Many players are super hard core focused when it comes to the TBL. How seriously do you take the league? Should wearing a shirt and tie be mandatory?
RI - I wouldn't go that far but I am all business when it's game time
TBL - what is it you like about the TBL?
RI - It takes you back to a time when things were simple and you can throw all grown up responsibilities out the window when it's game time.
