2013 BEACH DUSTERS

A wounded team of underachievers, who were dismissed by many forecasters as yesterday's news, the Dusters quickly turned into the force they insisted they were last fall and parlayed their strong postseason play into a championship.

The Beach will enter the 2014 year as defending champs after winning its first TBL crown last season thanks to a dominant playoff run in which the club strung together its only three-game winning streak of the year. While much of the year didn't go according to plan, the Dusters stepped up in the postseason and let their Easton aluminum bats and ace Matt Strevens' arm do the talking, outscoring opponents by a 17-2 margin.

Before that run? Well, it wasn't pretty. Throughout the regular season, the Dusters didn't look like the team that in previous years was considered among the league's best after back-to-back semi-final appearances in 2011 and '12. The reality is that the Dusters got hot at the right time and played up to their potential when the pressure was at its highest. But, in the end, that's all that matters, and the Dusters earned the right to talk a little smack and turn the Burby Cup into an oversized pint of beer.

"We're the *#%$%@! champs!" Chris Toman can still be heard yelling to anyone who will listen, while admiring a Burby Cup that has "Dusters 2013" plated on the front.

While they are still buzzing about the Cinderella season, the Dusters realize what's most important, and that's defending their title.

If they are to repeat, it will be done with the same cast of characters, as there's nothing new about the 2014 version of the Dusters. General Manager Jack Cherry saw what his team was capable of and opted against making any additions, preferring to maintain the status quo, instead. They will have some key reserves ready to step in and do damage, but the foursome that won it all a year ago will predominantly be the team the Dusters feature this upcoming campaign.

            SPELLS RELIEF                                 MVP                                POWER MAN

They hope, once again, that Toman's and Cherry's arms will hold up. Both have continuously battled arm ailments and have been a fraction of what they used to be on the mound, but last year the Dusters were able to get by thanks to the emergence of Strevens, who, as a rookie, solidified himself as one of the league's top arms. It's a lot to ask for again, but the Dusters have done it before and didn't believe any pitching upgrade was needed, as a result.

The Dusters will be looking for Toman to provide the club with more innings. If he can come into the year healthy, Cherry believes it can give the Dusters another top-of-the-rotation arm to throw out against the league's best.

Both Cherry and Toman, as well as Johnny Duco -- who last season assumed a much larger pitching role than expected -- will have to win some games on the mound when Strevens is unavailable, and the Dusters' bats are a big reason they should be able to.

Cherry proved once again last season that he's among the league's most complete hitters. He hits for average, draws walks, doesn't strikeout often and can put the ball over the fence at any time, against any pitcher. He is recovered from a left wrist injury that bothered him and zapped some power over the last chunk of the season, and remains an MVP candidate until further notice. The 2013 TBL leader in batting average and on-base percentage is the main offensive ingredient in the lineup and hits second behind Duco, the Dusters' leadoff man.

Not only was Duco valuable on the mound over a career-high workload, he once again set the table at the top of the lineup. Duco has proven to be a pest at the plate, as his quick hands allow him to get the bat on the ball and spoil pitches. The lone left-handed bat on the Dusters, Duco makes a lot of contact, has home-run power and gets on base at a high clip, putting Cherry in a constant position to do damage, which he usually does. For the Dusters, everything starts with Duco at the top and that will be no different in 2014.

Toman is looking to build off his breakout 2013 second half in which he emerged as one of the toughest outs in the league. That tear continued into and throughout the postseason, as he earned himself the playoff MVP. With more confidence, and a couple years of service under his belt, expect nothing but big things from the fiery competitor this upcoming season.

The Dusters will follow with Strevens, who provides the Dusters with big power out of the No. 4 spot in the lineup. Strevens doesn't hold back on any swing and no one should be fooled by his home run output from a year ago. He hit just one -- a mammoth walk-off blast against the now-defunct East York Heat -- but there's potential for much more. With a strong trio hitting in front of him, Strevens should get plenty of opportunities to cash in and have a big year at the dish. He's likely to go from being considered one of the league's top arms to one of the league's top players, period.

It's basically the same story as last season for the Dusters. They have an ace who will be relied upon heavily when October rolls around and believe that after Strevens a mix and match of Duco-Toman-Cherry can help them win some close games. The bats, they feel, will keep them in many contests and allow them to win some high-scoring affairs if the pitching isn't up to par.

The Dusters learned a lot last season and feel capable of overcoming whatever adversity is thrown their way in 2014. They stumbled through their worst regular season in franchise history, entered the playoffs as the No. 7 seed, and then went on to take down two formidable clubs in East York and Leslieville before disposing of North York in the finals.

They started from the bottom and ended on top, and the Dusters intend to stay there in 2014. It won't be easy, as the league continues to get stronger but the Dusters welcome the challenge and relish having a bullseye on their backs.

Dusters 2013 Preview

The Beach Dusters enter there 3rd year in the TBL and despite some solid seasons they have not been able to accomplish what they have set out to do....Make the big dance! With the parody in the league the way it is this will be no easy task.

The Dusters were hampered by arm injuries throughout last year to starters Chris Toman and Jack Cherry but with a year of rest they hope to come back strong. Along with improved arm strength in Johnny Duco and new hot shot Matthew Strevens manager Cherry is confident in anyone they throw out there.

Hitting as never been a problem with the Dusters as reigning slugger of the year Jack Cherry leads a talented squad. Johnny Duco will continue to be one of if not the best lead off hitter in the TBL and Chris Toman looks to bounce back hitting behind Duco and Cherry, expect a big year from Chris says Cherry. Strevens a burby vet will bring another power bat to an already potent line up.

The Dusters come into this year as a humbled club, having lots of respect for all there tier 1 opponents. It should be an exciting year and after starting strong last year then running out of gas, the boys from the Beach look to ease there way into the start of this year then walk with a swagger into the playoffs.

Go Jays!

THE BEACH CLOSES OUT RONCESVALLES

SUNDAY WAS A DAY OF CELEBRATION AND SAYING GOODBYE TO THE ROCKETS

Sep 23 2012-- The Beach Dusters limped into the playoffs leaving the rest of the league questioning the one time number 1 ranked team.  Injuries and work schedules got the best of the Dusters down the stretch and they clearly lost their groove.A regroup and change of attitude was necessary, manager Jack Cherry said pre-game reflecting on their recent string of losses. Well sure enough the Dusters got their swagger was back Sunday against the Rockets at Courcelette.

The Dusters elected to start Johnny Duco against arguably the best starter in the game Joe Callahan in hopes he would silence the potent Rockets bats for the first 2 innings before handing the ball off to Ace Chris Toman.  Duco did his job with 2 impressive scoreless frames.  Callahan was his usual self mowing down Dusters hitters through 4 innings with a nasty mix of his hard fastball and nasty curve not giving up a run.

A 0-0 game until the fifth, Rockets got on the board will a DY oppo double opening the scoring.  The Dusters answered with 2 of their own in the bottom half on a Johnny Duco 2 run triple. Duco carriedthe offense this day smashing 3 extra base hits including 2 off the Rockets starter.

A bulldog mentality helped Toman shut the door the rest of the way. He pounded the strike zone and only seemed to get stronger as the day went on.  Tossing 5 innings of 1 run ball.

Make the final 2-1 Dusters, this was a typical playoff punch for punch battle, a true TBL gem.  A great season by the Rockets who could very easily gone on to win the whole thing.

The Dusters know they will have to come with the same nothing to lose I don't give a F*** attitude against the number 1 seated Brickies.

WARRIORS ALMOST TAKE DOWN THE DUSTERS... CHERRY COMES UP BIG

The Dusters squeaked out a win on the final day of the regular season by inching past the Warriors, 1-0, at The Beaches on Sunday.

Both offenses were silenced for the majority of the day until Jack Cherry accounted for the game's only run by launching a solo homer, his seventh of the season, to center field in the bottom half of the fifth.

Cherry's homer ensured a win for Dusters (9-5) starter Chris Toman, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and picked up his third victory of the season.

Toman lasted five innings, allowing one hit, while striking out seven.

Johnny Duco threw the final two innings, showing off his best stuff of the season, to record his second save of the year.

The Warriors were eyeing their first career win and had it well within sights but ultimately fell short despite a hard-fought game. Warden's starting pitcher, Gary Massey, kept his team in the contest but the Warriors were unable to come up with the big hit and finished their year 0-14.

Cherry, who went 5-for-8 with three extra-base hits, finished off his career year at the plate by setting the single-season hits record and put himself in a good position to walk away with some postseason hardware.

The Dusters will get the Roncesvalles Rockets in the first round of the playoffs while the Warriors clash with the first-place Brickies.

WARDEN CAN'T TAKE COVER FROM THE BEACH BARRAGE

The Warriors Tom Haivarlis tries to give Robert Irvine some shelter against The Beach Dusters. Warden was routed 16-0.

What the Dusters soon found out is, that despite Warden's rough go in the TBL, the Warriors were no easy picnic, something they have proven throughout the 2012 year.

RBI single in the second that gave the Dusters a 1-0 lead, there were no runs put across the board heading into the fourth inning. But then the Dusters' bats came to life.

picked up his fourth win of the season while increasing his TBL-leading RBI total to 28, and the Dusters improved to 6-1 with a 16-0 win over the Warriors.

The 2011 TBL Rookie of the year went 7-for-11 with five extra-base hits, including his second home run of the season. Cherry drove in six of the Dusters' 16 runs, two games after collecting 10 RBI in a win over Roncesvalles.

Leadoff man Johnny DucoThe Dusters' trio all collected a few walks each and are now in a three-way tie for the league lead with 21.

Cherry's command issues allowed the Warriors to consistently get men on base, but he was able to escape damage by punching them out whenever he ran into trouble.

Warden fell to 0-7 with the loss and will get Roncesvalles next weekend, while the victory moved the Dusters into a first-place tie with Birchcliff ahead of a big clash with Leslieville.

DUSTERS STAY UNDEFEATED

The Beach Dusters took to Earl Haig to put their undefeated record on the line against the veteran Rockets.

Cherry got the start for his squad as Cherry and Toman continue to split innings in hope there arms are fresh come playoff time. Jack went 5 strong not allowing a run and striking out 5. Walks continue to be a concern for Cherry with 4 more Saturday but a knack for getting big outs with runners on base has saved him so far this year. Chris Toman came in to shut down the Rockets bats in the 6th and 7th striking out 2 and continuing to impress show casing 2 above average pitches.

The Dusters Jack Cherry had a big day against The Rockets

Cherry also played a big role in the Offense for the Dusters going 9 for 11 on the day with 10 RBI. "I was able to see the ball well today and square up most balls in the zone" Cherry said after the game. Johnny Duco continues to be an on base machine stroking a double and walking 4 times. Duco is showing why many believe he's the best lead off hitter in the TBL.

The Dusters were able to walk away with an 11-1 victory and will now gear up for a much anticipated match up with the power house Bears.

TBL PLAYER SPOTLIGHT ON.... JOHNNY DUCO

You know about the deadly pitching combo for the Beach Dusters, but does anyone know anything about their other solid player Johnny Duco? We know his brother Mike plays in the NHL. You may know that he was up for Rookie of the year in 2011 after quietly posting a .455 batting average. He also was second in 2b's (16) and OBP (.595). But really, we don't know Jack until now.

TBL - I heard you guys had no practice leading up to the start of the season yet your off to another good start. How come?

JD - We are lucky to have some naturally gifted athletes on our team that fortunately are able to keep their timing and arm strength during the off-season. When we enter the  field as a team we focus on having fun, battling for one another, and constantly grinding out our at bats. This seems to keep us ready to play without missing a beat.

TBL - You seem to be the quiet assassin on the squad. Good numbers and a calm demeanor. Is this a good discription of Johnny Duco?

JD - Yes I would say so, I just try to play the game the right way and get on base as much as possible, with a beast like Jack behind me it's usually a good plan for the team's success.

TBL - Sounds like your having a blast with your team. If you had to play with any other team in the TBL, who would it be and why?

JD - That's a tough one since there are so many great teams in the TBL, the easy choice would be the Heat to avoid the flame throwing Leach, but for me personally I would say the St. Clair Saints as they remind me a lot of our Beach Dusters team last season.

TBL - Interesting.I'll assume Your brother Mike Duco, will be playing again once hockey is over. How is that, playing with him in this Burby league?

JD - Oh ya he will be playing shortly, Jack will have to send him out to extended spring training but we should have him back in no time. It's always fun playing with him as he is away with hockey for the most part of the year, it gives all us boys a good chance to spend some time together like the good old days.

THE BEACH DUSTS OFF EAST YORK 1-0

Chris Toman has emerged as a solid starter for the Dusters. He allowed no runs over 5 innings

The Dusters and Heat met up in the most anticipated matchup of the week and  battled it out Saturday at Oakridge Hill.

Both squads took undefeated records into the game and played well enough to keep their perfect records intact, but East York walked away with their first loss of the season.

East York's Kevin Leach and the Dusters' Chris Toman got the nods and did not disappoint, but it was the Dusters who managed a 1-0 win, despite Leach throwing a no-hitter over five, while striking out 10. But it was four first-inning walks that he issued which proved to be the difference in the ballgame.

Toman, who improved to 2-0 on the year, nearly matched him, allowing just a pair of hits in the fourth, while walking one and striking out three before turning the ball over to Jack Cherry, who threw two scoreless innings to collect his second save of the year.

The Heat got a strong relief performance as well, as Rob Scotland blanked the Dusters over two innings and combined with Leach to allow no hits on the day.

The Dusters' keen eyes at the plate contributed to another victory, as they've collectively cut down on the free-swinging approach they had in 2011.

Beaches dusts off the Saints to go 2-0

April 21 2012-- On a cold April afternoon at the hitter-friendly Dragon's Den, a highly-anticipated game took place in the TBL this weekend. The No. 1 ranked Beach Dusters entered the game with a 1-0 record and took on the highly regarded St.Clair Saints, who also entered the contest at 1-0. The game started out with the Dusters taking a commanding 9-0 lead and forcing a mercy rule upon the Saints in the top of the first.
The rally included nine walks in the inning which was capped off by a Jack Cherry grand slam, as he continues his red hot start to the season.
At this point, the Saints clearly had enough as their leadoff man started them off with a triple off the top of the fence -- just inches from leaving the park. The Dusters clearly knew they were still in for a good game and that they better keep playing good ball.

Chris Toman gets a W in his first start of the season
In the second inning, the Saints continued to walk the Dusters as both Johnny Duco and Cherry continued to be patient at the plate and this time it was Chris Toman's turn to jump on the "dinger train" as be blasted his first of the season for a three-run shot to take a 13-2 lead after two innings.
Unfortunately for the Dusters, that was all the offence they could muster up on the afternoon, as the third Saints pitcher was lights out for a scoreless five innings.
Meanwhile, the Saints kept putting runs on the board as the game ended 13-6. Not to go unnoticed by the Dusters that after a 13-2 lead after two, the next five innings were won 4-0 by the Saints. The Saints showed well and will be a force to be reckoned with down the stretch once they get better acquainted with the league and their overall lineup.
In an effort to keep their pitchers fresh, the Dusters used Toman -- their closer -- for a start and he pitched well for five innings of work, giving up six hits, four runs, five walks, while striking out six to record his first win of the season.
Cherry came in for two innings in a non-save situation, giving up four hits, two runs, two walks and had three strikeouts. At the plate, Duco went 3-for-7 with three RBI and seven walks. Cherry was 2-for-4 with a homer, six RBI and nine walks. Toman, meanwhile, went 1-for-7 with a home run, four RBI and six walks.

Overall, it was a good game and there is no doubt the next will be even better.
-- Johnny Duco

The Beach Dusters take down the Brickies in the 15th inning, with a bases loaded triple off the top of the fence at The Haig!

April-1st 2012--If last season’s playoff matchup – in which the Brickies defeated the Dusters 3-1 in 10 innings -- didn’t create a rivalry between these two squads, then Sunday’s Opening Day game affair sure did.
The Dusters outlasted the Brickies, beating Leslieville 8-3 in a 15-inning marathon that not even rain, more rain, a brief period of hail or an adverse pitching mound could disrupt.
Johnny Duco and Dan Murphy hit RBI singles in the top of the 15th to put the Dusters up 5-3 before Jack Cherry added the insurance with a three-run triple off Brickies reliever Darren Osborne. It was the first runs to come across the plate since the Dusters tied the score up at three in the top of the seventh.
Despite the Dusters scoring five runs in the 15th, offense was extremely hard to come by, as superb pitching -- in the not the most ideal conditions -- was the story of this game.
The two starting pitchers, Cherry and Jeff Snow, cruised through their first five innings of work before turning the ball over to the bullpen. In total, Cherry, who was credited with the victory, threw seven innings of two-run ball, while striking out five. After experiencing some trouble in the first inning, where Cherry said he had “a lot of trouble locating,” the Dusters superstar was his usual self on the mound.
Snow, on the other hand, went 10 innings and allowed no runs, while striking out 10 on the day. It was an impressive first outing for him and one that the Dusters were expecting.
“He’s one of the toughest pitchers in the league,” said Dusters’ Chris Toman. “He works fast, which can be uncomfortable for a hitter, and something about his arm slot makes the ball difficult to pick up.”
Toman replaced Cherry and went eight innings, allowing just one run, while striking out nine. After starting off a little shaky, where he allowed a run and issued three walks in the sixth inning, Toman didn’t allow a runner to reach base over his six innings in extra frames. Toman pitched from the sixth through 12th innings, before Cherry re-entered to toss the 13th and 14th. Toman came back in to throw the 15th and struck out Snow before getting Rocky Parejo to fly out to end the game.
The Brickies turned to Parejo after Snow and he was impressive in his return to the TBL. Parejo surrendered three runs in four innings and was a tough out at the plate, finishing 3-for-12 with an RBI, and many well-hit balls throughout the afternoon.
“Rocky makes a deep Brickies team even deeper,” said Toman.
Osborne, who the Brickies turned to in the 15th, was credited with the loss. Osborne went 2-for-12 at the plate with an RBI and a team-high four walks.
Commissioner Adrian Golombek (Brickies), who went 2-for-10 with an RBI, and Cherry, 4-for-11, four RBIs, had to depart after the 14th of this extra-inning grudge match.
Snow and Toman both had each other’s numbers at the plate. Snow struck out Toman, who finished the game 3-for-12 with an RBI, in each of Toman’s first three plate appearances. Toman got some revenge by returning the favor a few times later in the game. The two have a history with one another dating back to last season.
In Toman’s first TBL game, he hit his only home run of the season off Snow at The Grounds of Earl Haig. However, it was Snow who had the last laugh after hitting a two-run homer off Toman in the semifinals to propel the Brickies to their second-consecutive finals appearance.
“It was nice to get him back a little, but I know this won’t be the end of it,” said Toman. “Snow is a pest at the plate, and, as he showed today, the mound as well. Most importantly, it was good to get a win in our first game of the season, against a quality opponent.”
Duco, an on-base machine, and the Dusters’ primary leadoff man, finished the game 4-for-10, with a pair of RBIs. Murphy went 5-for-12 with one RBI and made some key plays in the field, making up for a botched fly ball earlier in the afternoon.
“You guys don’t have one weak spot in the lineup, which is what made you the preseason No. 1,” Parejo said to Toman towards the end of the game.
The next time these two teams square off will be a must-see event, as their past two meetings have lasted a combined 25 innings.

2012 BEACH DUSTERS TEAM PREVIEW

The Dusters believe last season’s success -- in their inaugural year in the TBL -- was just the beginning. In short, 2011 was no fluke. The Dusters finished second in the regular season, earning themselves a first-round bye, before getting ousted from the playoffs in a heartbreaking, extra-inning loss to the underrated Leslieville Brickies. It was a tough exit for the boys from the beach, but they were pleased with the depth of their roster and will return everyone from the 2011 squad.

Led by one of the best two-way players in the league, Jack Cherry, the Dusters have a strong balance of hitting and pitching; a paramount ingredient for success in the TBL. Cherry had a landmark season, earning MVP of the TBL All-Star Game, as well as Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year. Cherry should be considered a trendy preseason MVP pick based on his exceptional raw power and strong arm. Despite having never pitched growing up, Cherry sports one of the better fastballs in the league. Cherry was a top-five hitter and pitcher in the league last year and the Dusters will be counting on that type of production from him once again this season.

On the other hand, leadoff man Johnny Duco enters the 2012 year after posting the highest OBP (.595) in a single-season in league history. Duco proved to be a pest at the plate and wasn’t overmatched by any arm, including the elite ones. A selective hitter, he sets the pace for the Dusters at the top of the lineup and is a viable reliever who keeps hitters off-balance with his secondary offerings. The Dusters wouldn’t be surprised if he took his game to another level after looking to be in mid-season form at the plate during a spring tuneup.

Many TBL players may not know the name Chris Toman but that will change.  Last years Dusters used Toman as their closer for the 2nd half of 2011.  This year Chris will split innings with starter Cherry and will provide another power bat for the potent Dusters line up.  After a sub par hitting year for Chris the Dusters are confident he will bounce back to form.  "Chris can be a top 5 hitter and pitcher in this league no question" Johnny Duco expressed this offseason.  All Star games and Awards are right around the corner for Chris and the Dusters are glad to be playing with him and not against him.

Outfielder Dan Murphy is an exceptional defensive player who showed the league he can also swing the bat. He was a tough out at the plate last year and showed an ability to continue counts through a knack of fouling off pitches. Murphy also has the arm to log emergency innings, which is extremely beneficial in this league. The Dusters are confident he will build off a strong second-half showing in 2011.

A professional-hockey career ended Mike Duco’s -- Johnny’s younger brother -- season early, but he proved to be a formidable presence when penciled into the lineup. Like his brother, his quick hands enable him to consistently get the bat on the ball. He was strong out of the ‘pen as well last season, making the Duco brothers one of the stronger relief pairings across the league. The Dusters missed Duco down the stretch, but if he can provide them with the same play he did during the first half of last season, they will gladly take it. Duco, again, will likely miss the stretch run of the 2012 year, but he’ll be an integral piece for the Dusters during the regular season, as they jockey for playoff positioning.

Last but not least the Dusters have added Colin May to the team.  The scrappy player will get the tap on the shoulder when the Dusters find themselves short handed.  He is raw but athletic and will relish the chance to get in the box.

Outlook: A lot of teams made offseason moves that should make the league even more competitive this year, while the Dusters remained quiet. With their eyes on the grand prize, the Dusters believe their homegrown talent will take another step forward in 2012. They aren’t weak anywhere and are coming off a season in which they set a league record with 108 hits as a team. The Dusters know they will enter the year with a bullseye on their backs after the preseason power rankings had them listed as the No. 1 team, but they don’t plan to disappoint. The Dusters are just one of a number of championship-calibre teams and will need improvement all around to get to the promised land in 2012.

2011

 DUSTERS MASONS

The Beach Dusters got back in the win column after shutting out the North York Masons at The Beach on Sunday.

Runs were hard to come by in this game, as both starting pitchers -- the Dusters' Jack Cherry and the Masons' Rob Leth -- were very effective over five innings of work.

Cherry stifled the Masons, while the offence was able to get some timely hits off Leth, which propelled the Dusters to a 3-0 victory.

The combination of Cherry and Chris Toman was too much for the Masons to overcome, both on the mound and at the plate. Before turning the ball over to Toman in the sixth, CThe herry threw five scoreless innings of three-hit ball, while striking out five on the day. Cherry was dominant as he's been for much of the season, and battled his way out of any jam he encountered.

Toman picked-up where Cherry left off, holding the Masons to one hit over two innings of work to notch his first career save.

At the plate, the tandem provided all the offence the Dusters needed. Toman (3-6) led the attack with three extra-base hits, including a pair of triples, while driving in two, and Cherry added some insurance with an RBI-triple, to go along with a double, finishing the game 2-6.

The Dusters' Dan Murphy proved to be a tough out at the plate despite going 1-6, and made some impressive catches in the field -- including a diving catch in the seventh -- to help preserve the Dusters'
shutout.

Beach Dusters Dan Murphy watches his teammates Chris Toman up to bat

Despite making solid contact, Cherry and Toman combined to keep Leth, the league-leader in home runs, hitless on the day and the Masons were shutout for the first time ever. Greg Ross went 2-6 in his Masons debut, and despite being away from the game for an extended period of time, proved that he can still swing the bat.

The Masons may be near the bottom of the standings, but they cannot be taken lightly with a difference-maker in Leth leading the charge.

On the other hand, the Dusters are jockeying for a top-spot, and while currently sitting in third place, have their eyes set on second. The Dusters will need to turn in complete efforts like they did on this day to achieve that goal.

Next up for the Dusters is a pivotal match against the second place Hallam Hammer this upcoming Sunday. While the Masons get a break and will face Leslieville on Sept.24th.

June/12-- The Dusters and Heat got together in a battle of the top east end teams in a last minute make up game and second game of the day for the Beach crew. The Dusters have heard a lot about Heat starter Kevin Leech and his overpowering fastball and Leech did not disappoint throwing 5 innings of 1 hit ball mowing down Duster after Duster. Beach starter Jack Cherry battled threw his 5 innings working out of jams and not allowing a run despite throwing 10 innings on the day. The beach got on the board in the 6th with back to back doubles by Johnny Duco and Cherry and Mike Duco came in and shut the door for another save. Great baseball game and these two teams look forward to playing together in this years all star game.

Another day at the park brought another W for the boys from the Beach. Despite falling down 4-0 to Roncesvalles, and getting shut down by DY through 5 innings, well-timed hitting clawed the Beach Dusters back into the game. Big bats from Roncesvalles opened the scoring throughout the first 5 innings with 2 long flys off starter Jack Cherry. Yet Cherry managed to connect for a 3-run bomb himself to centre field to even the game at 4. Injured Roncesvalles' bullpen righty was then lit up. Effective lead off walks and hits from Daniel Murphy and Johnny Duco and a plethora of hits were the difference as the Beach Dusters pulled ahead 7-4.  Beach closer Mike Duco gets his first win of the season and win #3 for the Dusters was in the books with a 7-4 final.  Kudos to Roncesvalles player Greg Majster for battling through the game despite clear discomfort. Next up for Beach is a date with East York at Courcelette. Roncesvalles faces SSK at the Haig.

Brickies get Cherry Picked

Dusters Jack Cherry pitched 5 scoreless innings en route to his 2nd win of the season

Beach Dusters rebound with big win

Leslieville and the Beach Dusters both came into this game fresh off blowout losses so one team was bound to get it together, and one team fall further into misery.
Beach starter Jack Cherry was throwing heat all day and though he scattered a few hits and a few walks his defense and his strikeouts always seemed to help him at just the right time. The Brickies sent Mark Kennedy to the hill and he had a fairly good start but was hurt in the 3rd when Mike Duco smashed a 2 run double to open the scoring. It became apparent the Brickies would have to score their runs off the relief pitching and hope Adrian Golombek could hold down the Beach Dusters. While Golombek looked dominant in his one inning, Dusters closer Mike Duco looked real good as he weaved through the Brickies in his 2 innings and worked around a bigtime triple off the fence by Darren Osborne to earn the save.

Dusters Matt Duco serves up a triple to Leslieville's Darren Osborne

A solid game played by both teams with one big hit being the difference in the game, with the 2-0 win the Dusters improve to 2-1 while the Brickies drop to 1-3. The Beach Dusters travel to the Dragons Den for a showdown with the Roncesvalles Rockets next week while the Brickies will Play at Earl Haig vs the Birchcliff Bears.
